Auditory pathways constitute the complex neural circuits responsible for transmitting and interpreting auditory information from the peripheral auditory system to the brain. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between voice characteristics and temporal auditory processing abilities in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • 40 participants aged 60+ were divided into groups based on vocal symptoms (Voice Symptom Scale).
  • Auditory temporal tests, vocal self-assessments, and acoustic/perceptual voice analyses were conducted.

Main Results:

  • Most participants showed decreased voice intensity but normal vocal quality variability.
  • Temporal auditory processing tests revealed alterations, particularly in the Random Gap Detection and Masking Period Pattern tests.
  • A correlation was found between temporal resolution deficits and increased vocal alteration severity and roughness.

Conclusions:

  • Central auditory processing, specifically temporal resolution, is impaired in the elderly.
  • This auditory impairment is significantly correlated with vocal alterations observed in older adults.
