Background:

The American Society for Nutrition's Committee on Advocacy and Science Policy convened a workshop to address the future of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
NHANES faces challenges including data collection issues, insufficient funding, and the need for more detailed data on at-risk subpopulations.
The workshop highlighted the survey's broad utility beyond nutrition research.

Framework:

Discussed current and emerging challenges facing NHANES.
Explored potential solutions for improving response rates among underrepresented groups.
Addressed the importance of data linkage and incorporating new methodologies.

Implementation:

A workshop was held during NUTRITION 2023 in Boston, MA.
Included a "Town Hall" session for audience feedback on NHANES challenges and solutions.
Identified actionable items for the American Society for Nutrition (ASN).

Implications:

ASN will use workshop outcomes to advocate for NHANES modernization and support.
Opportunities for partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics were explored.
Strengthened NHANES will ensure continued robust and relevant health and nutrition data for public health.
