Syrian men show low awareness of emergency contraception despite positive attitudes. Targeted education and improved access are crucial for enhancing its use, especially among younger men and those with lower incomes.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Health
- Public Health
- Sociology
Background:
- Emergency contraception (EC) is vital for preventing unintended pregnancies.
- Men's awareness of EC is crucial for informed decision-making and reproductive health.
- Limited research exists on Syrian men's perspectives on EC.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate Syrian men's awareness and perspectives on emergency contraception.
- To inform reproductive health initiatives by understanding knowledge, attitudes, and barriers.
- To identify factors associated with EC knowledge and attitudes.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study conducted in Syria (June 2022-April 2023).
- Survey of 30 questions assessing knowledge, attitude, and barriers among Syrian men (aged 18+).
- Data analyzed using SPSS, identifying associations with demographics and reproductive desires.
Main Results:
- Low knowledge of EC (36.1%), with internet/social media as primary sources.
- High positive attitudes (89%) but low support for nonprescription availability (37.3%).
- Income positively associated with EC knowledge and use; age and desire for children also linked to attitudes.
Conclusions:
- Significant knowledge gap regarding EC exists among Syrian men.
- Positive attitudes toward EC are prevalent, but awareness and support for accessibility need improvement.
- Targeted education and enhanced accessibility are recommended to boost EC use, particularly for younger men and those with lower socioeconomic status.
