Effects of Electronic Cigarette Vaping on Cardiac and Vascular Function, and Post-myocardial Infarction Remodeling in

Electronic cigarette (E-cig) vaping during heart attack (myocardial infarction) healing impaired vascular function, reducing blood flow and artery diameter. However, E-cig exposure did not worsen heart remodeling or cardiac function post-MI.

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effects of E-cig vaping on cardiac and vascular function during the healing phase of myocardial infarction (MI).
- To assess E-cig's impact on post-MI cardiac remodeling and vascular changes.
Main Methods:
- Myocardial infarction was induced in Sprague Dawley rats via coronary artery ligation.
- After one week, rats were exposed to either purified air or E-cig vapor (15 mg/ml nicotine) for 12 weeks.
- Cardiac and vascular function, including femoral artery blood flow and diameter, and left ventricular remodeling were assessed.
Main Results:
- E-cig exposure blunted peak reperfusion blood flow in the femoral artery (p=0.034) and reduced its diameter post-reperfusion (p=0.023).
- No significant differences were observed in left ventricular volumes, infarct expansion index, or left ventricular fractional shortening between E-cig and air groups.
- E-cig vaping during MI healing was associated with impaired vascular function but not worsened cardiac dilation or function.
Conclusions:
- E-cig vaping during the healing phase of myocardial infarction adversely affects vascular function, specifically reducing femoral artery blood flow and diameter.
- E-cig exposure did not lead to significant worsening of left ventricular remodeling or cardiac function in the post-MI period.
- Further research is needed to elucidate the long-term cardiovascular consequences of E-cig use following myocardial infarction.
