Background:

  • Hand eczema (HE) related presenteeism is understudied in the general population.
  • Limited data exists on HE-related sickness absence within the general population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of HE-related presenteeism and sickness absence in the Dutch general population.
  • To identify factors associated with HE-related presenteeism.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Lifelines Cohort Study, surveying participants aged 18-65 with HE in the past year.
  • Collected data on HE-related presenteeism, sickness absence, and socio-demographic factors from 2006-2020.

Main Results:

  • 2.7% of participants with HE reported presenteeism, rising to 19.8% for those with severe-to-very-severe HE.
  • HE-related sickness absence was reported by 0.5% and 5.9% respectively.
  • Presenteeism was linked to higher education, income, and occupational skill, but also to high-risk jobs, chronic HE, and occupational wet exposure.

Conclusions:

  • Severe hand eczema is associated with a high prevalence of presenteeism.
  • Further research should explore the longitudinal impact of presenteeism on HE symptom severity.
