This study demonstrates tandem mass spectrometry in an electrostatic linear ion trap (ELIT) using infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD). A novel mirror-switching pulse recovers time-domain signals for fragment ions, enabling new analytical capabilities.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Mass Spectrometry
- Physical Chemistry
Background:
- The electrostatic linear ion trap (ELIT) offers high-resolution mass analysis and ion isolation capabilities.
- ELITs have been underutilized for conventional ensemble measurements and tandem mass spectrometry.
- Exploiting ELIT's high-resolution ion isolation for tandem MS remains a key challenge.
Purpose of the Study:
- To demonstrate tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) within an ELIT.
- To investigate infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) for ion fragmentation in an ELIT.
- To develop methods for signal recovery in ELIT-based tandem MS.
Main Methods:
- Modified a homebuilt ELIT with BaF2 viewports for laser transmission.
- Utilized continuous-wave infrared multiphoton dissociation (cw-IRMPD) at ion mirror turnaround points.
- Implemented a mirror-switching pulse to generate time-varying perturbations in the ion beam.
Main Results:
- Demonstrated successful ion fragmentation via cw-IRMPD at ELIT turnaround points.
- Observed fragmentation over multiple oscillations due to low energy absorption.
- Recovered Fourier transform (FT) signals for specific peptide ions using the mirror-switching pulse.
Conclusions:
- Fragmentation at ELIT turnaround points using cw-IRMPD is feasible.
- Mirror-switching pulses can recover time-domain signals when fragmentation is distributed over many oscillations.
- This approach enables tandem MS within the ELIT, leveraging its high-resolution isolation capabilities.
