Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Background:

Sebaceous gland carcinoma is a rare, aggressive skin malignancy originating from sebaceous glands.
It occurs in ocular and extra-ocular locations, with ocular sites accounting for 75% of cases.

Observation:

A 45-year-old female presented with a rapidly growing upper back swelling, initially misdiagnosed as an infected sebaceous cyst.
Histopathology confirmed sebaceous carcinoma, Grade II, Stage P T3 Nx, with positive epithelial membrane antigen staining.

Findings:

Sebaceous carcinoma incidence is low, estimated at 1-2 per million individuals annually, comprising 0.2-4.6% of all cutaneous neoplasms.
Tumors often present as painless subcutaneous nodules but can mimic benign conditions, delaying diagnosis.

Implications:

Misinterpretation as benign lesions leads to delayed diagnosis and inappropriate treatment.
Timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial for managing this aggressive skin cancer and improving patient outcomes.
