Summary

The retroperitoneal (RP) approach for robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) shows lower overall complications, shorter operative times, and reduced blood loss compared to the transperitoneal (TP) approach. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Background:

  • Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) is a standard treatment for localized kidney tumors.
  • Both transperitoneal (TP) and retroperitoneal (RP) surgical approaches exist for RAPN.
  • The comparative efficacy of TP versus RP approaches in RAPN remains unclear.

Conclusions:

  • The retroperitoneal (RP) approach for RAPN is associated with significantly better perioperative outcomes, including reduced complications, EBL, BT, and LOS, compared to the transperitoneal (TP) approach.
  • Despite the observed benefits, the lack of randomized controlled trials necessitates further investigation to solidify these findings.
