Leishmaniasis is a protozoal disease caused by species of the genus Leishmania and transmitted through the bite of infected female sandflies. The parasite exists in two principal morphological forms during its life cycle. A sandfly acquires intracellular amastigotes from an infected reservoir host, such as a dog. Summary

Trichoscopy, a noninvasive scalp and hair analysis, reveals distinct eyebrow changes in leprosy patients. Distal eyebrow findings, including vellus hair and structureless areas, are most affected and easier to identify.

Background:

  • Trichoscopy offers noninvasive analysis of hair and scalp structures for early alopecia diagnosis.
  • Leprosy can affect various body structures, including hair and eyebrows.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe trichoscopy findings in the eyebrows of leprosy patients.
  • To differentiate between medial and distal eyebrow changes in leprosy.
  • To identify novel trichoscopic markers associated with leprosy.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 25 leprosy patients.
  • Ten dermoscopic characteristics were evaluated in the medial and distal portions of the eyebrows.
  • Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Cohen's kappa coefficient.

Main Results:

  • Vellus hair (96%) and white-yellowish structureless areas (84-92%) were prevalent in both medial and distal eyebrows.
  • Distal eyebrows also showed pinpoint white dots (92%).
  • New findings included perifollicular hyperpigmentation and yellow dots.

Conclusions:

  • This study is the first to detail trichoscopy findings in leprosy, specifically in eyebrow regions.
  • Medial and distal eyebrow areas are significantly affected, with distal changes being more easily identifiable.
  • Perifollicular hyperpigmentation and yellow dots are newly identified trichoscopic findings in leprosy patients.
