Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

86
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Bullying

8.4K
A modern form of aggression is bullying. As you learn in your study of child development, socializing and playing with other children is beneficial for children’s psychological development. However, as you may have experienced as a child, not all play behavior has positive outcomes. Some children are aggressive and want to play roughly. Other children are selfish and do not want to share toys. One form of negative social interactions among children that has become a national concern is...

Fundamental Attribution Error

According to some social psychologists, people tend to overemphasize internal factors as explanations—or attributions—for the behavior of other people. They tend to assume that the behavior of another person is a trait of that person, and to underestimate the power of the situation on the behavior of others. They tend to fail to recognize when the behavior of another is due to situational variables, and thus to the person’s state. This erroneous assumption is...

Anorexia Nervosa

68
Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. Summary

Childhood abuse significantly increases the risk of revictimization in women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV). White ethnicity and older age appear to be protective factors against revictimization in IPV.

Area of Science:

  • Social Sciences
  • Psychology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) is a significant public health issue.
  • Understanding revictimization is crucial for developing effective interventions.
  • Existing literature on revictimization factors in IPVAW is limited and heterogeneous.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify primary risk and protective factors associated with revictimization in women experiencing IPVAW through a meta-analysis.
  • To synthesize findings from existing quantitative research on IPVAW revictimization.

Main Methods:

  • A meta-analysis was conducted on 22 studies selected from an initial pool of 2382 identified in eight databases.
  • Analysis included non-manipulative quantitative studies on revictimization in heterosexual adult women.
  • A random-effects model was employed using the Metafor package in RStudio.

Main Results:

  • Childhood abuse emerged as the strongest risk factor for revictimization.
  • White ethnicity was identified as the most significant protective factor.
  • Other identified risk factors included substance use, recent physical violence, violence severity, and PTSD symptoms. Older age was protective in prospective studies.

Conclusions:

  • Childhood abuse is a critical risk factor for revictimization in IPVAW.
  • White ethnicity and older age may offer protection against revictimization.
  • Further research is needed to address the heterogeneity and limitations in the current literature on IPVAW revictimization.
