Physical activity and weight loss interventions improved body image in Latinas. This lifestyle program enhanced body image satisfaction regardless of weight loss or acculturation.
Area of Science:
- Health Behavior
- Exercise Science
- Cultural Health
Background:
- Negative body image is linked to reduced physical activity.
- Understanding body image and physical activity in diverse populations is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the relationship between body image and physical activity in Latinas within a lifestyle program.
- To assess the impact of a culturally adapted intervention on body image and physical activity.
Main Methods:
- Longitudinal study of Latinas (mean age 43.8 years, BMI 30.4 kg/m²) in a 12-month lifestyle intervention.
- Assessed body image dissatisfaction (BID) using the Figure Rating Scale and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) via 7-day PAR interview.
- Objectively measured body weight pre- and post-intervention.
Main Results:
- Pre-intervention BID did not predict changes in MVPA.
- Participants showed significant reductions in BID.
- Increased MVPA engagement and weight loss were independently associated with BID reduction.
- Acculturation did not moderate the relationship between BID, MVPA, and weight loss.
Conclusions:
- A cognitive and behavioral physical activity intervention improved body image in Latinas.
- Improvements in body image occurred irrespective of weight loss or acculturation levels.
- Culturally adapted lifestyle programs can positively impact body image and physical activity in this demographic.
