Computed Tomography

Tomography refers to imaging by sections. Computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses computers to analyze several cross-sectional X-rays to reveal minute details about structures in the body.
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Imaging Science
  • Electrochemistry

Background:

  • X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is crucial for non-destructive 3D imaging of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Image quality in XCT is vital for analyzing internal battery structures.
  • Rotary table errors introduce projection angle inaccuracies, degrading XCT image quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the impact of projection angle errors on XCT imaging quality for lithium-ion batteries.
  • To determine the necessary precision for projection angle sensors.
  • To improve XCT imaging quality by addressing angle errors.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental setup of an XCT scanning platform with an angle sensor for calibration.
  • Reconstruction of XCT images using a common 18650 cylindrical lithium-ion battery with introduced angle errors.
  • Analysis of image quality degradation caused by projection angle inaccuracies.

Main Results:

  • Projection angle errors introduce significant noise and stripe artifacts in XCT images.
  • Irregular artifacts appear in the image background due to angle inaccuracies.
  • Detection indicators like overall variation and residual projection error effectively reflect image quality trends.

Conclusions:

  • Projection angle accuracy is critical for high-quality XCT imaging of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Angle sensors can effectively calibrate projection angles, mitigating artifacts.
  • This research provides a method to improve XCT imaging quality for battery research.
