Area of Science:

  • * Virology and Epidemiology
  • * Public Health and Vaccine Development

Background:

  • * Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) causes Chikungunya (CHIK), a mosquito-borne illness with substantial acute and chronic morbidity.
  • * Chronic arthritis affects approximately 40% of CHIKV-infected individuals, leading to persistent pain and fatigue.
  • * Current CHIKV prevention relies on mosquito control, with no licensed antiviral drugs or vaccines available.

Purpose of the Study:

  • * To assess the potential public health, economic, and societal value of Chikungunya vaccines.
  • * To identify research and knowledge gaps in CHIKV vaccine development and implementation.
  • * To inform the value of vaccine-like products and those in the development pipeline.

Main Methods:

  • * A Vaccine Value Profile (VVP) for Chikungunya was developed.
  • * The VVP utilized existing, publicly available information.
  • * A working group of subject matter experts contributed to the VVP development.

Main Results:

  • * The VVP provides a holistic assessment of available data on CHIKV vaccines.
  • * It highlights the significant potential impact of vaccination on reducing disease burden and economic losses.
  • * The greatest benefits are anticipated in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC).

Conclusions:

  • * CHIKV vaccination holds significant promise for reducing the global burden of Chikungunya.
  • * Addressing knowledge gaps is crucial for realizing the full value of potential CHIKV vaccines.
  • * Vaccines could be particularly impactful in resource-limited settings disproportionately affected by CHIKV.
