Summary

Ring finger protein 34 (RNF34) is upregulated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and associated with poor prognosis. RNF34 may serve as a novel prognostic biomarker for ccRCC patients.

Background:

  • Ring finger protein 34 (RNF34) exhibits antiapoptotic and oncogenic properties.
  • RNF34 is upregulated in colorectal cancer but its role in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression patterns and prognostic significance of RNF34 in ccRCC.
  • To determine the association of RNF34 expression with clinicopathological parameters and patient survival.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of RNF34 mRNA expression in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) ccRCC cohort (N=533).
  • Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining of RNF34 protein in a ccRCC cohort (N=109).
  • Correlation of RNF34 expression with clinicopathological parameters and overall survival using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses.

Main Results:

  • RNF34 expression correlates with adverse clinicopathological parameters in ccRCC.
  • Higher RNF34 expression is associated with significantly shortened patient survival.
  • RNF34 expression is identified as an independent prognostic parameter in ccRCC.

Conclusions:

  • RNF34 is a potential prognostic biomarker for ccRCC.
  • RNF34 likely plays a significant role in the carcinogenesis of renal cell carcinoma.
