Summary

This case report details a successful multidisciplinary approach to treating a pediatric fibrosarcoma. Early surgical intervention combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy led to a favorable outcome, preserving limb function.

Background:

  • Soft tissue sarcomas represent 7%-15% of childhood solid tumors.
  • Pediatric fibrosarcoma, though rare, requires a tailored treatment strategy.
  • Complete surgical resection is the primary treatment for localized soft tissue sarcomas.

Observation:

  • An 11-year-old female presented with a highly vascularized soft tissue tumor on her right elbow.
  • Histological analysis confirmed a diagnosis consistent with pediatric fibrosarcoma with narrow surgical margins.
  • Positron emission tomography revealed no evidence of metastatic disease.

Findings:

  • Multidisciplinary treatment involving vascular surgery, pediatric oncology, and reconstructive surgery was initiated.
  • The patient received two cycles of chemotherapy and 20 sessions of radiotherapy.
  • Successful limb salvage was achieved with a partial-thickness skin graft and no further surgical intervention was required.

Implications:

  • Vascular surgeon involvement is crucial for limb salvage in complex tumor resections.
  • A combined approach of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy can be highly effective for pediatric fibrosarcoma.
  • This case highlights the importance of a coordinated, multidisciplinary strategy for optimal patient outcomes in pediatric soft tissue sarcomas.
