Background:

Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) require effective management to prevent malignant transformation.
Surgical interventions are common for OPMDs, but comparative data on healing and recurrence is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate and compare four surgical modalities for OPMD management.
Assess post-operative healing, pain, edema, and recurrence rates for cryosurgery, scalpel/blade surgery, diode LASER, and CO2 LASER.

Main Methods:

A study involving sixty outpatients with biopsy-confirmed OPMDs.
Inclusion criteria: oral lichen planus, homogeneous leukoplakia, non-homogenous leukoplakia, and erythroplakia.
Evaluation of post-operative pain, edema, healing outcomes, and recurrence at one and two-week follow-ups.

Main Results:

All four surgical modalities demonstrated effectiveness in treating OPMDs.
A decrease in post-operative pain and edema was observed across all groups at one and two weeks.
Cryosurgery exhibited lower post-operative pain compared to diode and CO2 LASER at immediate post-op and one-week follow-up.

Conclusions:

Cryosurgery, scalpel/blade surgery, diode LASER, and CO2 LASER are effective surgical options for OPMDs.
Cryotherapy appears to yield more clinically significant results than laser therapy in OPMD management.
Further research may explore long-term recurrence rates and patient-reported outcomes for each modality.
