Immunodeficiency Diseases

937
Immunodeficiency disorders are conditions in which the immune system's ability to fight infectious disease and cancer is compromised or entirely absent. The immune system comprises a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body from potentially harmful invaders. When this system is deficient or not functioning properly, it leaves the body susceptible to infections, diseases, or other complications.
There are three main causes of immunodeficiency...

Pulmonary Tuberculosis I

242
Tuberculosis, often called TB, is a contagious illness primarily caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It mainly affects the lung parenchyma but can also impact other body parts.
Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • An outbreak of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection was reported among children in Larkana District, Pakistan.
  • An international team investigated the outbreak's extent and cause between April and June 2019.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence of HIV among children in Larkana District.
  • To describe the distribution of HIV cases by time, place, and person.

Main Methods:

  • HIV testing was conducted on self-referred individuals using the national protocol.
  • Epidemiological data were reviewed to generate hypotheses regarding HIV transmission.
  • An infection prevention and control (IPC) team assessed healthcare practices.

Main Results:

  • A total of 30,191 individuals were tested, with 876 testing positive for HIV.
  • Of those positive, 719 (82%) were children under 15 years old.
  • Unsafe medical injections were implicated, with 99% of affected children having received injections or infusions within the past year.

Conclusions:

  • Unsafe healthcare practices in formal and informal settings are the most probable cause of the 2019 HIV outbreak.
  • Enhanced infection prevention and control (IPC) measures are recommended.
  • Specific focus on pediatric and antenatal care clinics is advised to improve patient safety.
