    Summary

    A new, cost-effective high-frequency (HF) audiometer shows reliable and valid results for assessing auditory sensitivity. This simplified system is recommended as a viable clinical tool for HF audiometry.

    Background:

    • High-frequency (HF) audiometry lacks standardized specifications, hindering meaningful interpretation of auditory sensitivity thresholds.
    • Existing HF audiometric systems vary in cost and complexity, limiting widespread clinical adoption.
    • A cost-effective HF audiometer based on the Grason-Stadler E-800 Bekesy audiometer has been developed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the reliability and validity of HF auditory thresholds obtained using a simplified E-800 Bekesy audiometer.
    • To establish a recommended threshold function for HF audiometry based on collected data.
    • To assess the clinical viability and cost-effectiveness of the simplified HF audiometer.

    Main Methods:

    • HF AC thresholds (8-20 kc/s) were measured in 170 ears of 85 normally hearing young adults.
    • Calibration was performed using NBS 9 A 6-cc and manufacturer's flat-plate couplers for stereophones.
    • Pen tracing excursion widths were analyzed and compared to previous HF audiometer studies.

    Main Results:

    • The simplified HF E-800 audiometer demonstrated highly acceptable reliability and validity.
    • Composite median threshold function showed a flat response through 12 kc/s, with increasing SPLs at higher frequencies.
    • No significant gender or ear-related differences were observed in the HF thresholds.

    • The simplified HF E-800 audiometer is a viable clinical tool for assessing auditory sensitivity.
    • This system offers superior cost-effectiveness compared to other HF audiometric systems.
    • A recommended composite median threshold function is provided for clinical interpretation.
