Background:

Soft-tissue knee injuries are common in children (12+) and adults.
Existing research has not adequately addressed patient and clinician uncertainties regarding these injuries.
A structured approach is needed to prioritize future research efforts.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and prioritize unanswered questions concerning the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and care delivery for soft-tissue knee injuries.
To focus on injuries including ligament tears, patella dislocations, meniscal tears, and articular cartilage damage.
To establish research priorities relevant to both pediatric (12+) and adult populations.

Main Methods:

The James Lind Alliance (JLA) methodology for Priority Setting Partnerships was employed.
An initial survey gathered over 1,000 uncertainties from patients and healthcare professionals in the UK.
A multi-stage process involving evidence checking, interim surveys, and a final prioritization workshop refined questions down to the top ten.

Main Results:

Ten priority questions for future research were identified, covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.
The highest-priority question identified was: 'How urgently do soft-tissue knee injuries need to be treated for the best outcome?'.
The results reflect the shared concerns of patients, carers, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Conclusions:

A validated, patient-centered process successfully generated ten crucial research priorities for soft-tissue knee injuries.
These priorities have been submitted to the National Institute for Health and Care Research for consideration.
All 27 questions discussed in the final workshop are publicly available on the JLA website.
