Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

32.0K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Executive functions are crucial for cognitive control.
  • Relational integration, a key executive function, involves complex information binding.
  • Hangover effects on relational integration are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of hangover on relational integration performance.
  • To explore the relationship between hangover, mood, and emotion regulation.

Main Methods:

  • A naturalistic study design was employed.
  • Twenty-seven participants completed an online relational integration task.
  • Mood and emotion regulation questionnaires were administered during hangover and non-hangover conditions.

Main Results:

  • Relational integration performance was significantly impaired during hangover.
  • Participants reported greater difficulties in emotion regulation when hungover.
  • Lower mood was reported during the hangover condition.

Conclusions:

  • Hangover negatively affects relational integration abilities.
  • Cognitive impairments during hangover may be linked to reduced domain-general processing resources.
  • Findings highlight the broad impact of hangover on cognitive functions.
