Summary

Ascaris suum worms were found in the biliary system of a piglet, an unusual location for this common swine parasite. This finding suggests considering ascariasis in pigs with liver and bile duct diseases.

Background:

  • Ascariasis, caused by Ascaris suum, is a prevalent swine parasitosis affecting all ages.
  • Unusual parasite localization can complicate diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report and characterize an atypical occurrence of Ascaris suum within the biliary system of a piglet.
  • To highlight the importance of considering ascariasis in differential diagnoses for hepatobiliary disorders in swine.

Main Methods:

  • Post-mortem ultrasound examination of the liver.
  • Gross and histopathological examination of the liver and bile ducts.
  • Morphological and molecular identification of isolated nematodes.
