Background:

  • Physician burnout, a syndrome from chronic job stress, is a growing concern in the US.
  • Breast imaging radiologists are a specialized group facing unique workplace stressors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of burnout in practicing breast imaging radiologists.
  • To identify dimensions of burnout most affected in this specialty.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was distributed to Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) members.
  • The survey included demographics and a validated Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).
  • Anonymous online responses were collected from February 19 to March 13, 2019.

Main Results:

  • Out of 370 respondents, 78.4% reported high burnout in at least one dimension.
  • 54.4% experienced high burnout in at least two dimensions.
  • Burnout in personal accomplishment was low (8.8% high burnout).

Conclusions:

  • A high prevalence of burnout exists among breast imaging radiologists.
  • Younger breast imaging radiologists reported the highest rates of burnout.
