  • Understanding the specific clinical activities and impact of AP professionals in RT is crucial for service delivery and professional development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a consensus-based mechanism for quantifying the clinical activities and impact of advanced practice radiation therapists (APRTs) in Ontario, Canada.
  • To develop a standardized framework for monitoring APRT clinical activities.

Main Methods:

  • A consensus-building project involving 20 APRTs and 14 RT managers in Ontario.
  • Expert feedback and online surveys using Likert scales (0-5) were employed to generate and refine an AP Activity List.
  • Activities were consolidated and ranked by importance and applicability to APRT roles.

Main Results:

  • An initial list of 47 AP activities was refined to 20 inclusive activities after incorporating feedback from RT managers.
  • The most applicable activities identified by APRTs included Technical Consultation, Contouring Target Volume, and Planning Consultation.
  • The least applicable activity was MR Applicator Assessment.

Conclusions:

  • This study represents the first systematic effort to achieve consensus on AP clinical activities in radiation therapy.
  • The developed AP Activity List and Definitions provide a standardized framework for ongoing monitoring of APRT clinical activities and impact.
  • Non-clinical AP activities such as research and education were outside the scope of this project.
