STEC colitis mimicking acute severe colitis with life-threatening consequences: a case report

Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) can cause acute colitis mimicking ulcerative colitis. Promptly exclude Shiga toxin-induced hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS) in severe colitis cases using multiplex-PCR.

- Early recognition of STEC-HUS is critical due to potential severe complications, including neurological damage and fatality.
Implications:
- STEC-HUS should be promptly excluded in patients presenting with acute severe ulcerative colitis.
- Multiplex-PCR assay on fecal samples is recommended for early diagnosis and management of STEC-HUS.
- This distinction is crucial for preventing life-threatening complications associated with STEC-HUS.
