Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles01:18

Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles

4.0K
There are hollow fluid-filled cavities known as ventricles deep inside the human brain. There are two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere, and each has three different projections — the anterior, inferior, and posterior horns visible from the lateral side. A thin membrane called the septum pellucidum separates the two lateral ventricles. The slender third ventricle in the diencephalon is connected to each lateral ventricle via a channel called the interventricular foramen.

Anatomy of the Eyeball

7.1K
The eye is a spherical, hollow structure composed of three tissue layers. The outer layer — the fibrous tunic, comprises the sclera — a white structure — and the cornea, which is transparent. The sclera encompasses some of the ocular surface, most of which is not visible. However, the 'white of the eye' is distinctively visible in humans compared to other species. The cornea, a clear covering at the front of the eye, enables light penetration. The eye's middle...

Cerebrospinal Fluid01:21

Cerebrospinal Fluid

2.2K
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a colorless liquid that flows around the brain and the spinal cord, playing a vital role in the protection, support, and overall function of the central nervous system (CNS). CSF production, circulation, and absorption are tightly regulated processes essential for the brain and spinal cord to function properly.
CSF Production
CSF is produced mainly in the choroid plexus, a network of capillaries and ependymal cells located within the ventricular system of the brain....

Anatomy of the Brain: Major Regions01:20

Anatomy of the Brain: Major Regions

4.5K
The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. It consists of four main parts: the cerebrum, diencephalon, cerebellum, and brainstem.
The cerebrum is the largest section of the brain and divides into left and right hemispheres, separated by a deep fissure. The cerebral outer layer of grey matter — the cerebral cortex — comprises elevations called gyri and shallow groves called sulci. The inner portion of white matter includes long nerve fibers known as axons, which connect...

Neuron Structure01:30

Neuron Structure

12.9K
Neurons are the main type of cell in the nervous system that generate and transmit electrochemical signals. They primarily communicate with each other using neurotransmitters at specific junctions called synapses. Neurons come in many shapes that often relate to their function, but most share three main structures: an axon and dendrites that extend out from a cell body.
Structure and Function of Neurons
The neuronal cell body—the soma— houses the nucleus and organelles vital to...

Background:

  • The human choroid is a vascular layer of the eye.
  • Understanding its structure is crucial for ocular health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a comprehensive review of human choroid structure.
  • To discuss its development, vasculature, innervation, and pathology.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of anatomical and histological studies.
  • Emphasis on macro- and microscopic anatomy.
  • Inclusion of functional and pathological aspects.

Main Results:

  • Detailed description of Bruch's membrane, choriocapillaris, Sattler's and Haller's layers, and suprachoroid.
  • Discussion on choroidal development, lymphatics, and neuronal control.
  • Overview of pathological angiogenesis in the choroid.

Conclusions:

  • The choroid's complex structure supports vital ocular functions.
  • Further research into choroidal lymphatics and neuronal control is warranted.
  • Understanding choroidal anatomy is key to addressing ocular diseases.
