Summary

Level-specific chirp auditory brainstem response (LS CE-chirp) shows larger and faster wave V responses in elders compared to click stimuli. However, these auditory brainstem response characteristics do not consistently correlate with hearing thresholds in the elderly.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate supra-threshold LS CE-chirp ABR characteristics in an aged population.
  • To compare LS CE-chirp ABR features with conventional click-evoked ABR.
  • To investigate the relationship between supra-threshold ABR measures and audiometric hearing thresholds in older adults.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study involving 125 adults aged over 65 years.

Conclusions:

  • Supra-threshold LS CE-chirp ABR exhibits similarities and differences to click ABR in elders, with larger and faster Wave V responses.
  • Clinical utility of LS CE-chirp ABR over click ABR in elders requires further investigation due to cautious interpretation at the individual level.
  • Consistent associations between supra-threshold Wave V features and hearing thresholds were not found, suggesting independent consideration of these measures in the elderly.
