Background:

  • Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common nasal mucosal reaction.
  • AR is associated with various ear conditions, including otitis media.
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction and bacterial infections are implicated in otitis media development alongside allergies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between allergic rhinitis and hearing loss.
  • To assess the impact of AR duration on audiological findings.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical evaluation of 100 participants with AR, including ENT history and examination.
  • Audiological assessments using Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) and Impedance Audiometry (IA).
  • Tympanometry was performed using a 226 Hz probe tone with a commercial tympanometer.

Main Results:

  • 46% of participants had normal hearing, while 43% exhibited mild conductive hearing loss.
  • Type A impedance curves were most common (47%).
  • Acute AR (<3 months) correlated with ear block and secretory otitis media; longer duration (>3 months) showed resolved otitis media and better hearing outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • A correlation exists between the severity of hearing loss and the duration of allergic rhinitis.
  • Allergic rhinitis can significantly impact middle ear function and hearing.
