Summary

Lower serum MECOM levels indicate lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). MECOM is a potential biomarker for identifying LUAD, especially in advanced stages, with high accuracy.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Biomarker Discovery

Background:

  • Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is a major cause of cancer-related mortality.
  • Accurate diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for LUAD are crucial for effective patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical significance of the MDS1 and EVI1 complex locus (MECOM) in LUAD.
  • To evaluate MECOM as a potential biomarker for LUAD detection.

Main Methods:

  • Bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation were used to determine MECOM expression levels in LUAD.
  • Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and Cox regression were employed to assess the diagnostic value of MECOM.

Main Results:

  • Serum MECOM levels were significantly lower in LUAD patients compared to controls.
  • Lower MECOM levels correlated with gender, TNM stage, tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis.
  • The ROC curve demonstrated an area under the curve of 0.804 for LUAD detection, reaching 0.889 for advanced LUAD with 90% specificity.

Conclusions:

  • MECOM shows potential as an independent biomarker for identifying LUAD patients.
  • MECOM is particularly valuable for detecting advanced stages of LUAD.
