Leaf dark respiration (RD) is not directly controlled by stomatal conductance (gs). Applying abscisic acid to lower gs did not impact RD, simplifying future research on respiration drivers.
Area of Science:
- Plant Physiology
- Plant Respiration
- Photosynthesis Research
Background:
- Leaf dark respiration (RD) is a key metabolic process.
- Previous studies suggest RD may be influenced by leaf transpiration rates and stomatal conductance (gs).
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the direct relationship between stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf dark respiration (RD).
- To determine if artificially manipulating gs affects RD measurements.
Main Methods:
- Abscisic acid (ABA) was applied to plants to artificially reduce stomatal conductance (gs).
- Leaf dark respiration (RD) and stomatal conductance (gs) were measured under controlled conditions.
Main Results:
- Leaf RD and gs showed temporal covariation.
- Artificial reduction of gs using ABA did not significantly alter measured leaf RD.
Conclusions:
- Observed diel fluctuations in gs do not directly drive measured leaf RD.
- These findings simplify the interpretation of environmental and physiological factors influencing temporal variation in leaf RD.
