New rare-earth metal imide complexes were synthesized using a double methane elimination reaction. These complexes exhibit reactivity towards carbon dioxide insertion, forming carbamate complexes.
Area of Science:
- Organometallic Chemistry
- Rare-Earth Chemistry
- Synthetic Chemistry
Background:
- Rare-earth metal imide complexes are valuable in catalysis and materials science.
- Synthesis of these complexes often involves challenging elimination reactions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize novel terminal rare-earth metal imide complexes.
- To investigate the reactivity of these complexes with carbon dioxide.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis via double methane elimination from Lewis acid stabilized dialkyl precursors.
- Reaction with aniline derivatives and Lewis bases like N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine (DMAP).
- Treatment with 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) for donor exchange.
Main Results:
- Successfully synthesized terminal imide complexes of dysprosium and holmium.
- Observed the formation of mixed methyl/anilido species and Lewis acid bridged imides.
- Demonstrated CO2 insertion into the imide complexes to form carbamate complexes.
Conclusions:
- Developed a new synthetic route to rare-earth metal imide complexes.
- Highlighted the versatile reactivity of these complexes, including CO2 insertion.
- Opened avenues for further exploration in rare-earth organometallic chemistry.

Stereoisomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula.
Transition metal complexes often exist as geometric isomers, in which the same atoms are connected through the same types of bonds but with differences in their orientation in space. Coordination complexes with two different ligands in the cis and trans positions from a ligand of interest form isomers. For example, the octahedral [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+ ion has two isomers (Figure 1) In the cis...

Structural Isomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly, SCN− can...
