Background:

Home-based telehealth offers potential for managing rheumatic diseases.
Understanding its appropriate application is crucial for rheumatology practice.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a scoping review of literature on home-based telehealth in rheumatology.
To assess telehealth suitability, barriers, patient-reported outcomes, and satisfaction.

Main Methods:

Searched multiple databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science) and meeting abstracts.
Included 33 articles (2 RCTs, 9 cohort, 22 retrospective) addressing telehealth in rheumatology.
Focused on telehealth suitability, barriers, patient-reported outcomes, and satisfaction.

Main Results:

Telehealth is appropriate for follow-up of systemic lupus erythematosus and inflammatory arthritis patients; new patient visits are less ideal.
Barriers include patient factors (age, tech access) and physician/process factors (physical exams).
Telehealth does not lead to negative outcomes, patient satisfaction is high, and it's equivalent to in-person visits in several scenarios.

Conclusions:

Home-based telehealth has significant potential for managing rheumatic diseases.
Further research, including randomized controlled trials, is needed to guide telehealth implementation.
Telehealth can effectively supplement in-person care for rheumatic disease patients.
