Intramembranous ossification is one of the two processes involved in the development of bones within an embryo. Summary

Background:

  • An 84-year-old male developed HO in an abdominal scar after a colostomy reversal.
  • Physical examination revealed no abdominal tenderness, but laparotomy identified retroperitoneal adhesions and a bone-like structure in the abdominal wall.
  • Pathological examination confirmed metaplastic bone deposition, diagnosing heterotopic ossification.

Findings:

  • A rare case of heterotopic ossification was identified in the abdominal wall scar of a patient who underwent colostomy reversal.
  • The ossification was discovered incidentally during laparotomy for post-operative complications.

Implications:

  • Heterotopic ossification, though rare in abdominal scars, can lead to severe complications.
  • Surgical excision is a viable treatment for symptomatic HO, while asymptomatic cases may be managed conservatively.
