Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Medical Device Innovation
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is a common procedure.
  • Efficient and safe aortic valve resection is crucial for successful SAVR.
  • Current methods may have limitations in terms of debris management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate a novel circular blade device for aortic valve resection.
  • To assess the device's efficacy in resecting the aortic valve.
  • To evaluate the device's capability in collecting resection debris.

Main Methods:

  • A single-size, 22 mm external diameter circular blade device was used.
  • 10 patients undergoing SAVR were selected for native aortic valve resection.
  • Patient selection was based on preoperative aortic diameter assessment.

Main Results:

  • The device achieved complete aortic valve resection in 90% (9/10) of patients.
  • No debris embolism was observed in any patient.
  • All patients experienced an uneventful postoperative course.

Conclusions:

  • Aortic valve resection using the circular foldable blade is feasible.
  • The device is an efficient tool for valve resection, even through small incisions.
  • The prototype effectively resects the valve without releasing debris.
