Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT01:30

Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT

237
Radiological investigations, including X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, are critical for diagnosing and evaluating various medical conditions. These imaging techniques provide valuable insights into the body's internal structures, aiding in the detection of abnormalities, assessment of disease progression, and development of treatment strategies. This article delves into two primary radiological investigations, chest X-rays and CT scans, outlining their purpose, procedures, and...

X-ray Imaging

5.5K
German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen (1845–1923) was experimenting with electrical current when he discovered that a mysterious and invisible "ray" would pass through his flesh but leave an outline of his bones on a screen coated with a metal compound. In 1895, Röntgen made the first durable record of the internal parts of a living human: an "X-ray" image (as it came to be called) of his wife’s hand. Scientists worldwide quickly began their own experiments with...

Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

4.2K
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body...

The Scientific Method01:32

The Scientific Method

226.7K
The scientific method is a detailed, empirical problem-solving process used by biologists and other scientists. This iterative approach involves formulating a question based on observation, developing a testable potential explanation for the observation (called a hypothesis), making and testing predictions based on the hypothesis, and using the findings to create new hypotheses and predictions.
Generally, predictions are tested using carefully-designed experiments. Based on the outcome of these...

Cancer02:18

Cancer

48.5K
Cancers arise due to mutations in genes involved in the regulation of cell division, which leads to unrestricted cell proliferation. Modern science and medicine have made great strides in the understanding and treatment of cancer, including eradicating cancer in some patients. However, there is still no cure for cancer. This is largely due to the fact that cancer is a large group of many diseases.

Summary

The number of authors on radiology and medical research papers has significantly increased since 1998. Later publication dates are consistently linked to more authors per article in both fields.

Area of Science:

  • Medical research
  • Radiology
  • Bibliometrics

Background:

  • Previous research indicated a rise in author numbers for radiologic articles from 1950 to 2013.
  • The underlying reasons for this trend remained unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the continued trend of increasing author rates in radiology and general medical literature.
  • To identify study-specific variables associated with a higher number of authors per publication.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive search of PubMed/Medline was conducted for articles published between January 1998 and October 2022.
  • Top-tier general radiology and general medical journals were selected based on impact factors.
  • Generalized linear regression and mixed-effects regression analyses were employed to assess authorship trends and influencing factors.

Main Results:

  • Authorship rates increased substantially in radiology (median 6 to 11 authors) and general medicine from 1998 to 2022.
  • Later publication year was independently associated with a higher author count in both journal types.
  • The increase in authors per publication was more pronounced in general medical journals compared to radiology journals.

Conclusions:

  • A significant increase in the number of authors per article is evident in both radiologic and general medical literature.
  • The year of publication is a key independent predictor of the number of authors contributing to a research article.
