Background:

  • Medial knee osteoarthritis (OA) involves medial meniscus extrusion, worsened by mechanical stress like knee adduction moment (KAM).
  • Reduced knee rotation during gait is a known issue in early knee OA, but its link to meniscus extrusion is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between medial meniscus extrusion and knee rotation range during gait in early and late-stage knee OA patients.

Main Methods:

  • Forty knee OA patients were categorized into early and late stages using the Kellgren-Lawrence scale.
  • Medial meniscus extrusion was measured via ultrasonography, while gait kinetics and kinematics were captured using 3D motion analysis.
  • Correlations between medial meniscus extrusion, knee rotation, and KAM were assessed across all patients and within each stage.

Main Results:

  • A significant negative correlation was found between increased medial meniscus extrusion and knee rotation range, specifically in the early OA group.
  • Increased medial meniscus extrusion also showed a significant correlation with the second knee adduction moment (KAM) peak in both overall and early OA groups.

Conclusions:

  • A reduced range of knee rotation during the stance phase of gait may be associated with increased medial meniscus extrusion in individuals with early knee OA.
