Background:

Reputation is a key concern in cultures of honor.
The relationship between social identity and reputational concerns needs further exploration.
Cultures of honor emphasize reputation and social standing.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the within-person association between social identification and honor-related reputational concerns.
To examine the longitudinal relationship between regional identification and reputational concerns in southern Italy.
To test whether reputational concerns predict, are predicted by, or are bidirectionally linked to group identification.

Main Methods:

Longitudinal study design.
Random intercept cross-lagged panel model.
Survey data from 1,173 participants in southern Italy.

Main Results:

A significant positive association was found between within-person group identification and subsequent honor-related reputational concerns.
Longitudinal effects from reputational concerns to group identification were not significant.
Findings suggest group identification influences reputational concerns in cultures of honor.

Conclusions:

Social identification plays a role in shaping reputational concerns within cultures of honor.
Future research should explore the nuances of this relationship in different cultural contexts.
The study highlights the importance of group membership in understanding honor-related behaviors.
