Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the interplay and centrality of psychopathological symptoms, sensorimotor, cognitive, and global functioning.
  • To examine these relationships in a transdiagnostic sample of patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and mood disorders (MOD).

Main Methods:

  • Network analysis and community detection were applied to a sample of 212 patients (174 SSD, 38 MOD).
  • Assessments included the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Heidelberg Neurological Soft Signs Scale (NSS), Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), and a Brief Cognitive Assessment Tool (TMT-B, CF, DSST).

Main Results:

  • Sensorimotor (NSS) and cognitive (TMT-B, CF, DSST) functions showed stronger connections than with global functioning (GAF) or psychopathology (PANSS).
  • Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), PANSS general, and NSS motor coordination exhibited the highest expected influence (EI).
  • Sensory integration, DSST, and category fluency (CF) demonstrated the highest strength.

Conclusions:

  • The findings indicate a close relationship between sensorimotor and cognitive impairments, suggesting shared pathophysiology in SSD and MOD.
  • High centrality of sensorimotor symptoms points to their potential as a transdiagnostic therapeutic target.
  • Further studies with more balanced diagnostic groups are necessary to confirm sensorimotor symptoms as a transdiagnostic target.
