Cancer Therapies02:49

Cancer Therapies

7.7K
Cancer therapies are various modes of treatment, such as surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy that are administered to cancer patients.
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...

Nursing Interventions II: Selecting and Classifying the Nursing Interventions

2.2K
Creating and executing a nursing diagnosis helps nurses plan care and guide patient, family, and community interventions. They are developed based on a patient's physical evaluation and support measuring the outcomes. It is not recommended to select random interventions throughout the planning process. Instead, consider the following six essential factors when choosing interventions:

Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

345
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

7.6K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against...

Psychosurgery

54
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.
Historical Development of Psychosurgery
In the 1930s, Portuguese neurologist Antonio Egas Moniz introduced a surgical procedure designed...

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine02:50

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine

4.9K
Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

Summary

Spiritual interventions for childhood cancer patients show no significant benefits for quality of life, anxiety, or depression. More rigorous research designs are needed to evaluate these spiritual interventions effectively.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Oncology
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Psychosocial Care

Background:

  • Spiritual interventions are considered vital in pediatric cancer care.
  • Systematic evaluation of their effectiveness is lacking.
  • This study addresses the need for evidence-based spiritual support for childhood cancer patients (CCPs).

Approach:

  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies.
  • Searched eight databases for relevant literature.
  • Assessed risk of bias and synthesized findings using narrative synthesis or meta-analysis.

Key Points:

  • Twelve studies involving 576 CCPs were analyzed.
  • Eight studies had a high risk of bias.
  • No statistically significant effects were found for quality of life, anxiety, or depressive symptoms.
  • High heterogeneity among studies may explain nonsignificant findings.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence is insufficient to support the positive effects of spiritual interventions on CCPs' psychological and spiritual outcomes.
  • Future research requires more rigorous designs and standardized outcome measures.
  • Reducing bias and heterogeneity is crucial for future evaluations.
