Telitacicept shows promise in treating refractory lupus nephritis (LN) when combined with mycophenolate mofetil. This combination rapidly reduced urine protein in a patient with refractory LN, with no significant side effects observed.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Rheumatology
- Immunology
Background:
- Refractory lupus nephritis (LN) is a severe complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), often leading to kidney failure.
- Biological agents are increasingly used for SLE due to their specificity and favorable side-effect profiles.
- Limited data exist on the efficacy of telitacicept for refractory LN.
Observation:
- A case study involving a 25-year-old female patient with refractory lupus nephritis is presented.
- The patient developed Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia during conventional multi-targeted therapy.
- Treatment with telitacicept in combination with low-dose mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) was initiated.
Findings:
- Telitacicept combined with low-dose MMF demonstrated rapid relief of proteinuria in the patient.
- The treatment regimen was well-tolerated, with no significant adverse events reported.
- This suggests a positive therapeutic effect of telitacicept in refractory LN.
Implications:
- Telitacicept may be a viable and safe treatment option for refractory lupus nephritis.
- Combination therapy with low-dose MMF warrants further investigation.
- Larger studies and patient registries are needed to confirm these findings and establish optimal treatment protocols.
