Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) effectively reduced depression and anxiety in adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). SFBT also enhanced executive function and brain activity in key areas.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) significantly impacts adolescent mental health and cognitive functions.
- Executive function deficits are common in adolescents with MDD, affecting daily life and treatment outcomes.
- Exploring novel therapeutic approaches like Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is crucial for adolescent mental health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of SFBT in treating MDD in adolescents.
- To assess the impact of SFBT on executive function in this population.
- To investigate the neurobiological changes associated with SFBT using fNIRS.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 129 adolescents diagnosed with MDD.
- Comparison between SFBT group (n=28) and an Active Control (AC) group receiving psychodynamic psychotherapy (n=25).
- Assessment of depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), anxiety symptoms (GAD-7), executive function (VFT), and prefrontal cortex activity (fNIRS) at multiple time points.
Main Results:
- SFBT significantly reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms from the third intervention onwards.
- Adolescents in the SFBT group showed significant improvements in verbal fluency task performance.
- fNIRS data indicated increased oxyhemoglobin levels in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in the SFBT group compared to the AC group.
Conclusions:
- SFBT demonstrates potential as an effective treatment for adolescent MDD.
- SFBT may improve executive function and associated neural activity in adolescents with depression.
- Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and explore long-term effects.
