Short-distance Transport of Resources02:12

Short-distance Transport of Resources

Short-distance transport refers to transport that occurs over a distance of just 2-3 cells, crossing the plasma membrane in the process. Small uncharged molecules, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, can diffuse across the plasma membrane on their own. In contrast, ions and larger molecules require the assistance of transport proteins due to their charge or size. Transport across membranes also occurs within individual cells, playing a variety of essential roles for the plant as a whole.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Texting while walking significantly alters gait. Mobile phone use decreases walking speed and step length while increasing forefoot and midfoot pressure, indicating a shift in weight distribution.

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Human locomotion
  • Mobile technology impact

Background:

  • Mobile phone use is prevalent during daily activities.
  • Understanding its effect on gait is crucial for public health and safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of mobile phone texting on gait spatiotemporal and plantar pressure parameters.
  • To quantify changes in walking patterns associated with texting behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty healthy volunteers (18 males, 12 females) participated.
  • Gait parameters and plantar pressure were recorded during normal walking and while texting on a 10-m path.
  • Paired samples t-test analyzed differences between conditions.

Main Results:

  • Texting while walking led to significant decreases in cadence, speed, and step length (P < 0.05).
  • Plantar pressure analysis revealed significant increases in forefoot and midfoot load and pressure (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Walking while texting alters biomechanics, increasing forefoot and midfoot pressure compared to normal walking.
  • Reduced walking pace and a forward shift in attention are likely contributing factors.
