Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare postoperative thrombocytopenia between Perceval and Intuity sutureless aortic valves.
  • To assess the impact of thrombocytopenia on patient and transfusion outcomes.
  • To evaluate early mortality and neurological complication rates.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 595 aortic valve replacement patients (53 with sutureless valves).
  • Compared platelet counts and transfusion requirements between Perceval (n=23) and Intuity (n=30) valve groups.
  • Used Carpentier Edwards Perimount Magna valves as a reference group.

Main Results:

  • Perceval group had significantly higher platelet transfusion (5.48 packs) vs. Intuity (0.60 packs).
  • Severe thrombocytopenia (<50,000/μL) was more prevalent in the Perceval group (56.5%) than Intuity (6.7%).
  • Platelet counts improved postoperatively in both groups, with faster recovery in the Intuity group.

Conclusions:

  • Postoperative thrombocytopenia severity significantly differs between Perceval and Intuity valves.
  • Perceval valves are linked to higher rates of severe thrombocytopenia and transfusion needs.
  • Despite differences in thrombocytopenia, early mortality and neurological complications were similar between groups.
