Background:

Hip fracture surgery carries a significant risk of 30-day mortality.
Identifying modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify novel risk factors for 30-day mortality following hip fracture surgery.
To confirm previously established risk factors associated with post-hip fracture mortality.

Main Methods:

Prospective data collection from a hip fracture database (2011-2021).
Inclusion of 3523 patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.
Application of univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses to identify risk factors.

Main Results:

The 30-day mortality rate was 8.6%.
Significant risk factors identified include advanced age (90+ years), male gender, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grades 3-4, dementia, low albumin, reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR), nursing home residency, higher Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (KATZ-ADL) score, and postoperative pneumonia.

Conclusions:

Several factors significantly increase the risk of mortality within 30 days of hip fracture surgery.
These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive patient assessment and management to mitigate risks.
