    Summary

Pubic lice (Phthirus pubis) infestation on the eyelids can mimic contact dermatitis in children. Mechanical removal of lice and eggs resolved symptoms, highlighting a rare cause of pediatric eyelid inflammation.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Dermatology
    • Parasitology

    Background:

    • Eyelid itching and redness are common symptoms that can be misdiagnosed.
    • Contact dermatitis is a frequent differential diagnosis for pediatric eyelid conditions.

    Observation:

    • A 7-year-old boy presented with eyelid itching and redness, initially diagnosed as contact dermatitis.
    • Slit lamp examination revealed active pubic lice (Phthirus pubis) infestation on the eyelid margins.

    Findings:

    • Mechanical removal of pubic lice and their eggs from the eyelids was performed.
    • Complete resolution of itching and redness occurred within one week post-treatment.

    Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of considering unusual causes of pediatric eyelid inflammation.
