School-age children's conceptions of the heart and its function: Part I: Review of literature
Insights
This study explores how school-age children understand the heart and its functions. It reviews literature on pediatric heart conditions, child cognitive development, and organ concepts to inform the research.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Health
- Developmental Psychology
- Medical Education
Background:
- Understanding children's health concepts is crucial for effective health education.
- Previous research indicates varying levels of comprehension regarding bodily functions among school-age children.
- The heart's function is a complex topic often misunderstood by young learners.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate school-age children's existing knowledge and misconceptions about the heart.
- To identify key developmental factors influencing children's understanding of cardiac function.
- To establish a baseline for developing targeted educational interventions regarding pediatric heart health.
Main Methods:
- This report presents a literature review, not empirical data collection.
- The review synthesizes existing research on congenital heart disease in children.
- It examines cognitive development and function in school-age populations.
- The review also covers children's conceptualizations of various body organs.
Main Results:
- The literature review highlights a gap in understanding children's specific conceptions of the heart.
- Existing research provides context on cognitive abilities relevant to understanding biological concepts.
- Information on children's general body organ knowledge is available but not specific to the heart's function.
Conclusions:
- Further research is needed to detail children's understanding of the heart.
- Methodology and findings from the primary study will be presented separately.
- This foundational review sets the stage for future investigations into pediatric cardiac comprehension.
Abstract:
A study was conducted to learn more about school-age children's conceptions of the heart and its function (kotchabhakdi, 1984). This report presents the review of literature pertinent to the study. The review includes three areas: congenital heart disease in children, cognitive development and cognitive function of school-age children, and children's conceptions of body organs. Part II, namely, methodology and findings of the study will be reported in Monograph 15, the Winter 1985 issue of this Journal.
