Spontaneous epidural haematoma (SEDH) is a rare complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). This report details the first Danish pediatric SCD case with SEDH, suggesting early imaging for symptomatic patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Hematology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder.
  • Spontaneous epidural haematoma (SEDH) is a rare but serious neurological complication.
  • The association between SCD and SEDH is infrequently reported.

Observation:

  • This case report describes the first pediatric patient in Denmark diagnosed with both SCD and SEDH.
  • The patient presented with symptoms indicative of an epidural haematoma.

Findings:

  • The pathophysiology linking SCD and SEDH remains unclear.
  • Potential contributing factors include skull bone infarction, bone marrow expansion, and hyperviscosity-related blood flow compromise.
  • This case adds to the limited literature on SEDH in SCD patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Early diagnostic imaging should be considered for SCD patients exhibiting relevant neurological symptoms.
  • Increased awareness of this rare complication may improve patient outcomes.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of SEDH in SCD.
