Bioremediation00:46

Bioremediation

18.3K
Bioremediation is the use of prokaryotes, fungi, or plants to remove pollutants from the environment. This process has been used to remove harmful toxins in groundwater as a byproduct of agricultural run-off and also to clean up oil spills.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Geochemistry
  • Ecotoxicology

Background:

  • Pollutant accumulation in river sediments can harm riparian ecosystems and increase ecological risks.
  • Understanding metal sediment contamination is crucial for assessing watershed health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of metal sediments on riparian soil in the Melen River watershed.
  • To determine pollution levels, seasonal variations, and pollutant sources.
  • To evaluate the ecological status and risk associated with metal contamination.

Main Methods:

  • Field monitoring and Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis were employed.
  • Ecological risk assessment using various indexes (contamination factor, enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, pollution index, modified pollution index, ecological risk indexes) was performed.

Main Results:

  • Metal concentrations (Cr, Co, Cu, Ni) significantly increased downstream, with Cu, Co, and Ni posing the highest risk.
  • Sediment and riparian soil exhibited heavy pollution (PI > 3, MPI > 10) and high ecological risk indexes (RI > 50, mRI > 200).
  • No significant seasonal differences in metal sediments were observed, but spatial distribution varied markedly.

Conclusions:

  • Surface water pollutants are transported to sediments, adversely affecting riparian zones and the ecological system.
  • Copper, cobalt, and nickel represent significant ecological risks in the Melen River watershed.
  • The watershed is heavily polluted, exceeding safe environmental risk thresholds.
