Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation

5.7K
Cell separation was first achieved in 1964 by S. H. Seal, who separated large tumor cells from the smaller blood cells using filtration. Two years later, Pohl and Hawk performed experiments on how cells respond differently to a nonuniform electric field based on the cell type. Such observations were the inception of cell separation methods, which allow isolating a single cell type from a heterogeneous sample.

Area of Science:

  • Cell Biology
  • Histology
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Telocytes (TCs) are CD34-positive interstitial cells with distinctive telopodes.
  • TCs form complex communication networks with stromal and epithelial cells.
  • TC network dysfunction is linked to disease onset and progression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review methods for characterizing telocytes.
  • To discuss functional assays for studying telocyte roles in health and disease.
  • To explore future directions in telocyte research and therapeutic targeting.

Main Methods:

  • Review of established and novel characterization techniques for telocytes.
  • Analysis of functional assays, from traditional to recent methods.
  • Discussion of emerging strategies for telocyte-specific drug delivery and genetic editing.

Main Results:

  • Telocytes are present across various organs and species, forming intricate networks.
  • Impairment of TC networks is implicated in numerous pathological conditions.
  • Current methods for TC characterization have inherent difficulties.

Conclusions:

  • Telocytes play a significant role in physiological and pathological processes.
  • Further research into precise markers and targeted therapies is essential.
  • Advancements in drug delivery and genetic editing hold promise for TC-based treatments.
