Abstract:
The sixtieth birthday of Sheela Devi was being celebrated with fanfare. After 4 years of absence, Anupam had come from the United States to India with his parents for the occasion. He was observing "Dadi" (his grandmother) closely. Dadi was quiet, not speaking a word or moving. Her eyes were open and blinking. She looked awake but did not seem to be looking at anyone. The family chatter was loud, but she did not seem to be listening.
