Group Therapy01:26

Group Therapy

32
Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...

Chest Physiotherapy

451
Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) is a therapeutic technique used in respiratory care to improve ventilation, clear bronchial secretions, and enhance the efficiency of respiratory muscles. This therapy includes three primary procedures: postural drainage, percussion, and vibration. It can be performed on spontaneously breathing patients and those who are intubated and mechanically ventilated.
Purpose
CPT is primarily used for patients with excessive bronchial secretions who have difficulty clearing...

Exercise and Muscle Performance01:27

Exercise and Muscle Performance

1.4K
Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Summary

Group exercise programs in physiotherapy are feasible and well-accepted by patients, showing high adherence and satisfaction. Further research is needed on program fidelity and costs.

Area of Science:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Exercise Science
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Group-based exercise programs are increasingly utilized in physiotherapy.
  • Synthesizing implementation literature is crucial for optimizing these programs.
  • Understanding patient and provider perspectives is key to successful implementation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize the implementation literature on group-based exercise programs within physiotherapy settings.
  • To identify common implementation outcomes, particularly feasibility and acceptability.
  • To highlight gaps in current research regarding program fidelity and cost-effectiveness.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted in MEDLINE and Embase databases for articles published between 2000 and 2022.
  • Two independent reviewers screened titles/abstracts and full texts, extracted data using the Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template, and assessed study quality with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool.
  • Thirty-one studies involving 4555 participants were included in the narrative synthesis.

Main Results:

  • The implementation of group-based physiotherapy exercise programs was generally found to be feasible.
  • High rates of patient adherence (36-91%), attendance (36-91%), and satisfaction (scores >7/10) were reported.
  • Moderate-to-high completion rates (46-100%) and low-to-moderate dropout rates (4.5-35.9%) were observed, indicating good program acceptance.

Conclusions:

  • Group-based physiotherapy exercise programs demonstrate feasibility and high acceptability among patients.
  • Existing literature highlights successful implementation in terms of adherence, attendance, and satisfaction.
  • Future research should focus on generating evidence regarding implementation fidelity and associated costs to guide healthcare stakeholders.
